St Monica - Year 3

St Monica was born at Tagaste in Roman Africa. Her parents brought her up as a Christian. When she grew up she married a pagan man who had a violent temper. She attended church every day and asked God to make her husband a better person. Monica had three children and the oldest one was called Augustine. Monica's prayers for her husband were eventually answered and he became a Christian. He also learnt to control his temper.

Now Monica's prayers were all for her son because he did not work at school and when he grew up, he continued to follow his own way and not God's. He moved to Rome and Monica followed him there. She kept praying for him until he too began to follow Jesus and was baptised.

St Monica was returning home when she died at the age of 56 in Ostia.

Her feast day is 27 August and she is patron saint for patience, wives and mothers.
